Recreation and Entertainment
What is Recreational Therapy?
Recreational therapy, also known as therapeutic recreation, is a systematic process that utilizes recreation and other activity-based interventions to address the assessed needs of individuals with illnesses and/or disabling conditions, as a means to psychological and physical health, recovery and well-being.
The purpose of the RT process is to improve or maintain physical, cognitive, social, emotional and spiritual functioning in order to facilitate full participation in life. Services are provided or directly supervised by a “Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist” (CTRS).
Recreational therapy includes, but is not limited to, providing treatment services and recreation activities to individuals using a variety of techniques including arts and crafts, animals, sports, games, dance and movement, drama, music, and community outings. Recreational therapists at Qualicum Manor work with recreation or activity workers, to treat and help maintain the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of our residents by seeking to reduce depression, stress, and anxiety; recover basic motor functioning and reasoning abilities; build confidence; and socialize effectively.
Personal Service
Providing personalized service for our long-term residents is the cornerstone of Qualicum Manor. We work with many community partners to access various amenities including hairdressers, dental hygienists, foot care specialists, massage therapists, and healing touch practitioners.
Resident Focus
We aspire to provide an approach to care that supports the whole person, that upholds their right to a life full of purpose, connection, empowerment, and possibility… regardless of age or changing abilities.
We want to focus on what can be achieved, not what can’t. We know that living well in Long Term Care depends on connection and contribution and we all want that, don’t we.
We do our very best to ‘know you’, to understand what may be important to you. It’s called a person-centered and person -directed philosophy.
Located in the heart of Qualicum Beach, Qualicum Manor, is an inclusive, happy community. We are a connected group of residents, families, caregivers and volunteers. We honour and recognize your stories, always. No matter what home means to you, there are common threads that connect us all. Wanting to feel safe and connected, to have the right amount of physical support and comforts. But really, it’s knowing you are seen.
